Problem

After entering a VIN or opening a repair order for a specific vehicle, Shift either shows nothing, white-screens, or returns an error like 'no repair order attached.' Other vehicles work fine on the same shop.

Cause

Our vehicle data provider (Motor) sometimes can't validate certain VINs even when they are valid. Most cases resolve once the support team applies a manual fix or once the underlying provider data updates. A small subset of vehicles (especially heavy-duty trucks) aren't covered by the OEM data set at all.

Resolution

  1. Refresh the Shift extension and the Tekmetric tab.
  2. If a single VIN is failing, send it to Shift support so we can check whether Motor's lookup is failing or the data is missing.
  3. While we investigate, you can fall back on shop-defined services and add maintenance manually for that vehicle.
  4. If the vehicle is heavy-duty (e.g., RAM 5500 and similar), see the 'Heavy-duty vehicle support' article — those vehicles are not currently supported by our OEM maintenance data.
