Problem

After a release, features behave unexpectedly, the extension white-screens, or new functionality is missing. Common when the user has been running an old extension build (e.g., 2.1.3) for a while.

Cause

Chrome only auto-updates extensions when the browser is fully quit and reopened. Users who keep Chrome running indefinitely (especially with many tabs open) won't pick up new versions.

Resolution

  1. Open chrome://extensions.
  2. Find the Shift Extension entry and note the version number.
  3. To force an update, remove the extension and reinstall it — there's a link to the install page in the Shift app's Settings screen.
  4. After install, fully quit Chrome (not just close the window) and reopen.
  5. Best practice: fully quit Chrome every few days so extensions auto-update on the next launch.
